SPIRIT FEST FIREWORKS REKINDLED, MURAL PROJECT SAVED

There will be fireworks at White Rock’s Spirit of the Sea Festival.

Festival director Matt Todd confirmed this week a sponsor has stepped forward to help meet costs of the display.

Cressey Development Group initially pitched in $5,000. And, after learning remaining funds were found by trimming a community mural project, the company donated an additional $2,000 to cover that shortfall as well.

The festival team had decided Monday night to find the remaining funds needed for the fireworks by foregoing two of three murals that had been in the plans.

“It was a question of where do we put our money,” Todd explained Tuesday. “If we have x dollars and we want more than what x provides, something has to give.”

Feedback on news earlier this month that the August long weekend’s fireworks may be cancelled clinched the decision to juggle the budget.

“There was a lot of people who felt it was a highlight of the day,” Todd said. “It seemed to be something that was motivating people to come to the festival... and then they were there for all the other activities. It was a significant draw.”

And that was all Cressey officials needed to hear. After reading about planned cuts on peacearchnews.com, vice-president Hani Lammam announced Wednesday Cressey would also cover the $2,000 to “ensure the event is as good as it can be.”

“Supporting the arts is always a good cause, but in this case the public art is for the benefit of the overall community, so we felt obligated to cover the shortfall and allow the event to take place,” Lammam said in a news release.

The murals are planned for the outer wall of the Balsam Street change rooms, and the washroom building at the foot of Oxford Street.

The fireworks display, set for 10:15 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 2, will be “very dramatic,” Todd noted, with “a lot more colour and a lot of bang.”

Other recent additions to the festival include street hockey games hosted by the Surrey Eagles; an ultimate frisbee demonstration by members of Surrey Ultimate League; kids games hosted by Softball B.C.; a car show Sunday in Semiahmoo Park; and a Fine Arts market in the park at the base of Oxford Street.

The torch light parade – customarily a Sunday event – has been moved to Saturday evening, in an effort by organizers to attract more volunteers.

CRESSEY SAVES NEW PUBLIC ART MURALS

Wednesday, July 22, 2009

South Surrey, BC: Cressey Development Group, the developer of Summerfield, a new single family community at 2nd Avenue and 172nd Street, was made aware of a budget shortfall for the annual Spirit of the Sea Festival in White Rock and wants to help out.

As reported in the Peace Arch News July 22, 2009 by Tracy Holmes, Cressey made an initial donation to the festival to participate in the popular event. Unfortunately, due to continued budget shortfalls, some events had to be reduced in size or discontinued. One such event is the wall murals which stay up all year around at Balsam Street and Oxford Street. An advocate of public art, Cressey decided to donate an additional $2,000 needed to save the event.

“Supporting the arts is always a good cause, but in this case the public art is for the benefit of the overall community, so we felt obligated to cover the shortfall and allow the event to take place. This is particularly important to us as we live and work in this community,” says Hani Lammam, Vice President of the Cressey Development Group.

“We are very excited to participate in the Spirit of the Sea Festival and to do what we can to make it a huge success. Our homes at Summerfield are about encouraging a strong sense of community both within the neighbourhood and in the broader community and that means participating in community based events when we can,” adds Lammam.

Summerfield is a new neighbourhood of character single family homes under construction in the quaint Douglas community of South Surrey. The first families will be moving in this fall. Cressey Development Group is a locally based company with over 40 years of experience building in the lower mainland.
